Once more into the breach…..

We just took a trip to Ashland for the Shakespeare Festival, so I’m feeling mildly Shakespearean.

You may have noticed that I didn’t start writing again after that last post. Well, I came home from work mad enough to chew up an anvil and spit nails, and I just don’t like writing when I’m grumpy.

Partly, I don’t like saying bad things about groups I’m a part of, and partly I just didn’t feel all that much like communicating. We seem to have worked things out, or at least it’s possible that we have, and thereby hangs a tale. I was hired into a new group at Microsoft to create the new generation of tools for concurrent and high performance programming. The group was supposed to grow to about 15, and my boss and I were supposed to be the technical leads. She’s doing the admin, but is very technical, with enough difference in our backgrounds to make things really interesting. Reality intruded at 4 people, when we got cut off and put as a rump group working on a project that didn’t really know how to operate with a remote team.

It wasn’t what we wanted to do, but we had hopes that we could bring things around. Both working with the group and finding a better home proved harder than we anticipated. On our last trip, we seem to have made a breakthrough, and we are changing to a group much better aligned with our goals.

Just after we got back, Flo and I decided on the spur of the moment to spend a week in Ashland watching plays and visiting Southern Oregon, and I’m much happier now.

I’ve got some pictures from the trip, and I’ll roll them out over the next week or so.

I glad you are blogging again, you are much better at it than I am. Also very glad your job is becoming more palatable.  Kathy
